In a competitive job market, candidates that are an exact or a very close match for the job requirements will get the interview.Was your application complete? Did you provide all the information required on the job application?Did you make a mistake on your application? Were all the dates of employment you listed on your application correct? Did you list accurate salary information? Did you leave off any information that should have been included? Some employers verify employment history prior to scheduling interviews. Thats one reason why its important to accurately complete your job applications. Did you target your resume? Does your resume showcase skills and accomplishments related to your target job? Is it clear how you added value in your previous jobs, internships, academic projects and volunteer w ork?Is your resume organized so that the most relevant content is near the top and can be easily found by the screener?Was your cover letter targeted toward the requirements of the specific job you applied for? Did you make it clear that you possessed the desired skills, experience and knowledge to get the job done? Was your cover letter long enough to make a compelling case, but no so dense that the recruiter glossed over it. Ideally, your letters should be three to five paragraphs long, with none of those paragraphs longer than eight lines. Be sure to leave white space between paragraphs.Were all your application documents error free and well written? Have you asked others to review and proofread your resume and cover letter?Did you mobilize your network to find any contacts on the inside of your target employer who might put in a good word for you? You could make an interview mistake that can cost you a second interview or a job offer. Even when you interviewed well there could be other candidates who did a better job or were more qualified. Here are some of the reasons why you may not get a job offer. Were you dressed appropriately? First impressions mean a lot, and if you werent dressed in appropriate interview attire it could cost you the job before you even get into the interview room.Were you on time and polite to everyone you met? Manners matter and being late for an interview or rude to a receptionist can cost you the job. Make sure youre aware of proper job interview etiquette before you head out the door.Did you convey genuine enthusiasm for the work throughout the interview? All things being equal, employers will often hire the most motivated candidate who they think would invest the most energy into the job. Did you research the company? Did you take the time to find out as much as possible about the company and the job you were being considered for? Employers expect you to have done your homework.Were you prepared for the interview? Were you ready to answer interview questions? Did you have a list of questions ready to ask the interviewer?Did you share six to nine reasons why you should be hired and back up those assertions with specific examples of how you successfully employed those assets in previous roles? Did you establish a positive connection with your interviewer(s)?Did you display an air of confidence without being smug or over confident?Did you make it clear at the end of the interview that you wanted to move on in the screening process? Rejection Happens Do keep in mind that you could do everything right and still not get the job. It is quite possible that you presented yourself in the best possible fashion and were beat out by an extraordinary candidate who just offered more to the employer. If you have determined that the position was a good fit and you did your best to impress the interviewer, then all you can do is pursue as many other options as possible with the saatkorn effective approach. Rejection can actually be a good thing in the long run. If the company didnt think you were the best candidate for the job, it may have not been the best fit for you. Instead of spending too much time regretting the job you didnt get, move on to the next opportunity. Sooner or later you will be the preferred candidate. Global gender gap starts taking hold as early as 10 years old, study finds Global gender gap starts taking hold as early as 10 years old, study finds With a  gender pay gap in the U.S. that has persisted for decades, deep-rooted expectations about whether  men or women should be breadwinners or the caregivers, and evidence that women and men have different experiences on everything from negotiating salaries to ending up in the C-suite, the influence of gender in the workplace is everywhere.Now, new research has found that the roots of that gender differential begins as early as the age of 10 - whether you’re a child growing up here in the United States, or in places as far as New Delhi.Researchers who conducted a 15-country analysis from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the World Health Organization  that found that gender stereotypes become ingrained even before adolescence, and have damaging repercussions for both men and women in their personal and professional lives.The researchers found that young boys and girls in countries as diverse as Nigeria, Scotland, the U.S., and Vietnam get confined to a “ gender straitjacket” of rules that say girls are damsels in distress in constant need of supervision, while boys are taught to be strong and independent. Those stereotypes are in place often regardless of culture or income, they found.“We found children at a very early age - from the most conservative to the most liberal societies - quickly internalize this myth that girls are vulnerable and boys are strong and independent,” Robert Blum, director of the Global Early Adolescent Study, said. “And this message is being constantly reinforced at almost every turn, by siblings, classmates, teachers, parents, guardians, relatives, clergy and coaches.”Through 450 interviews with children ages 10 to 14 years old and their parents and guardians, researchers found that while boys in New Delhi and Shanghai get to explore the outside world unsupervised, girls in those cities are told to stay indoors and do chores. Overall, researchers found that parents focus on supervising daughters over sons and that these well-meaning acts of protection cause lasting, lifelong harm to girls who are taught to see themselves as subservient.Study: Girls are taught they are weak and vulnerable“Messages such as - do not sit like that, do not wear that, do not talk to him, boys will ruin your future - support the gender division of power,” the study’s authors wrote.Girls who try to break with tradition are often physically or emotionally abused, researchers found. And girls across cultures are taught that their appearance and their sexuality are one of their most valuable assets, which can promote damaging ideas about identity and self-worth.Once these myths take root, they’re hard to escape.For girls, harsh attitudes about “proper” behavior and stringent sexual norms can result in them dropping out of school at higher rates and experiencing sexual violence at higher rates, researchers found.Boys also harmed by cultural stereotypes, researchers findFor boys, being to ld you need to be an invulnerable macho man leads to higher risks of men engaging in risky behavior, tobacco and alcohol consumption and other forms of self-harm.In addition, while women have made some progress in being allowed to buck certain cultural norms - being allowed to wear pants, in addition to skirts, being allowed to play sports and enter the workforce, which were taboo generations before - boys who want to dress in skirts or display more feminine stereotypes are harshly punished, researchers found.“When researchers examined attitudes about gender roles among young adolescents in China, India, Belgium and the United States, they found a growing acceptance for girls pushing against certain gender boundaries, but almost zero tolerance for boys who do,” according to the press release accompanying the study.Among the consequences that boys face for trying to act more stereotypically feminine include bullying and physical violence, researchers found.What to do about it†œWe know from research studies and programmatic experience that unequal gender norms can be changed, but this takes carefully planned and implemented interventions that target both young people and the environment they are growing and developing in,” V. Chandra Mouli, the co-director and scientist at the Adolescents and at-Risk Populations Team, Reproductive Health and Research Department for the World Health Organization, said in a statement.For their study, the researchers suggest the answer for mitigating these risks is to start interventions at earlier ages. While many interventions aimed at adolescence are targeted to children in puberty, researchers warn that by then, it may be too late to change their mindsets.

Words You Can't Say on TV Words You Can't Say on TV Rules limiting what can be said on U.S. television are created by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), which is responsible for regulating the U.S. airwaves. The rules often are complicated and open to interpretation, and understanding them is not as simple as memorizing George Carlins famous 1972 comedy routine about seven words you cant say on TV that led to his arrest. According to the FCC, three types of content- obscene, indecent, and profane- are restricted, and each is defined differently. Obscenity Content deemed to be obscene is not protected by the First Amendment. The Supreme Court has ruled that content is obscene if it meets three standards: Appeals to prurient interests: This means the content includes excessive sexual references or images or is specifically intended to arouse its intended audience sexually.Depicts sexual acts in offensive ways: This means the content goes beyond acceptable community standards.Lacks serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value: Another way to look at this standard is that works of art, political issues that address sex, and scientific research that involves sex is protected from being labeled obscene. Content that is deemed to be obscene generally falls under the category of pornography because the focus is sexual in nature, and it has no value beyond its intent to be titillating. Obscene content is banned from the airwaves at all times. Indecency Sexual or excretory organs or activities or words describing them that do not meet all three standards to be deemed obscene are considered to be indecent, according to the FCC. This standard and the profanity standard are what the FCC use to restrict content including things like nudity or specific slang words that describe sexual or excretory functions. Indecent content is prohibited between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. Profanity Similar to the indecency standard, this applies to what the FCC considers to be grossly offensive language outside of community standards. Like indecent content, profane content is prohibited between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. This time restriction is why shows like Saturday Night Live can get away with more risque language than a typical prime-time show. High-Profile Cases Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake had roles, whether planned or accidental, in the infamous wardrobe malfunction that exposed Jacksons breast during the Super Bowl in 2004. This incident led to an eight-year court battle that began with the FCC fining CBS, which aired the game, $550,000. CBS appealed the fine and won. The FCC challenged the appellate courts ruling, but the Supreme Court declined to hear the case. A year before that, ABCs NYPD Blue showed a womans bare bottom in prime time and was slapped with more than $1 million in fines. Those fines also were later overturned by an appellate court, which argued that the FCC standards were unconstitutionally vague. NBC aired the Academy Award-winning Holocaust film Schindlers List uncut, which included both nudity and profanity, and was not fined by the FCC, even though it aired between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. The difference between a cop drama series and a blockbuster movie designed to accurately depict the horrors of history is likely for the FCCs distinction, but this kind of inconsistency is what has helped broadcasters succeed in court when challenging FCC rulings. Broadcast Television vs. Cable Because the FCCs function is to monitor the airwaves, it does not regulate cable TV. That was made clear when it did not take action against the FX cable TV show Nip/Tuck in 2005, despite getting complaints about its content. The major broadcast networks- ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC- and their affiliate stations all use public airwaves licensed from the government to transmit content for free, and that is what the FCC regulates. Cable channels get their programming into homes by wire or satellite to paying customers. Obscene content still is uncommon on cable channels, because obscene content is not protected by the First Amendment, but the FCC has no jurisdiction over cable channels when it comes to indecent or profane content.

How to Customize a Job to Fit Your Life How to Customize a Job to Fit Your Life Engaged employees use more than the skills their job descriptions detail to get work done.  They take the list of responsibilities that define their roles and filter those through their characters-enabling them to dig into that work and make it their own. Tweaking a role to suit your skills and personality , once you’ve lived in that job and you understand its nuances, is both a survival skill and a self-management initiative. Professors Jane Dutton and Amy Wrzesniewski coined the term “job crafting” to describe how employees use their personalities to reshape their roles and earn themselves a better fit in their work.  Dutton, Wrzesniewski and their colleague Justin Berg point out that job crafting is “what employees do to redesign their own jobs in ways that foster engagement, job satisfaction, resilience and thriving.” When crafting your role, you use your skills , character and connections to enact your work in ways that honor the individual you are. This makes your job more suited to you, and thus more meaningful. If you’re not already job crafting, here’s what you need to know.     Job crafting is about being engaged, alert, mindful and proactive. You’re not waiting around to be noticed. You’re using the opportunity you have to find fulfillment in your work.   In every job description , there’s a range of responsibilities and expectations; some are major parts of the role, some are minor responsibilities. As you work your way into your position, you are inclined to developed tricks, short cuts and collaborations that help you enact your duties effectively.     As you systemize your workflow, you may find yourself with room to explore the less-prominent responsibilities associated with your job. Grow these. Further develop a project that is at the edge of your scope of responsibilities. Dutton, Wrzesniewski and Berg point out: “Your job comprises a set of building blocks that you can reconfigure to create more engaging and fulfilling experiences at work.” Perhaps, for example, you have a marginal role entering data for your team. In your conversations with the database manager, you’ve learned about a new mode of reporting that you think could help your unit. You have the time and expertise to take it on. Talk with your manager. See if you can stretch into this. It would enhance what you produce for your team, and it would be exciting to dig deeper into the database component of your role.   In the same way, you may have a skill that you’re eager to further develop in your daily work. Let’s say, for example, that writing is a minor part of your role. If you love to write, and you can streamline your other operations, you earn yourself more time to volunteer for new responsibilities that are aligned with your interest.  Make it your goal to take on more writing projects. As you grow and strengthen this skill, add it as a performance goal. Check with your manager to see if there are development resources that you can secure to grow the skill; perhaps there’s a writing or grammar workshop that you can attend, for example.   Identifying ways that you would like to deepen your role to be a better fit for your skillset is a win-win for you and your company.         If you have a hand in defining the trajectory of your work, using your talents and interests to streamline it, the work will feel more like yours. It will matter more to you, and it will help you evolve professionally. Wrzesniewski explains: “One trend that I think will continue is the likelihood that individuals will not be spending their careers in one firm or even a few firms. That’s going to necessitate taking responsibility for putting together your own plan for how you’re putting together the steps of your career , the skills that you’re building and the eventual impact you hope to have in a way that will be your responsibility as opposed to the responsibility of people who used to develop you in firms.” Job crafting is a self-management initiative, which gives you the power to find satisfaction in your work and forge your own development and trajectory.   Wrzesniewski explains that most employees engage in some level of job crafting . Understanding what’s involved and directing it mindfully can enable you to do it strategically. It’s ideal when a manager notices that you’re doing great work and offers you a meaningful opportunity. But rather than holding your breath to get noticed, take responsibility for your own professional satisfaction. Job craft like no one is watching, because soon enough someone will be.

It’s graduation season, and we here at Ladders have decided to take a look back and showcase some past commencement addresses that stand the test of time. Below is the full transcript of Steve Jobs’ commencement address to Stanford’s Class of 2005:I am honored to be with you today at your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world. I never graduated from college. Truth be told, this is the closest I’ve ever gotten to a college graduation. Today I want to tell you three stories from my life. That’s it. No big deal. Just three stories.The first story is about connecting the dots.I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit. So why did I drop out?It started before I was born. My biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption. She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so everythin g was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife. Except that when I popped out they decided at the last minute that they really wanted a girl. So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking: “We have an unexpected baby boy; do you want him?” They said: “Of course.” My biological mother later found out that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school. She refused to sign the final adoption papers. She only relented a few months later when my parents promised that I would someday go to college.It’s  commencement season!Follow Ladders’  Commencement Addresses magazine on Flipboard  to watch and read all of the most inspiring speeches from this year and years past.And 17 years later I did go to college. But I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and all of my working-class parents’ savings were being spent on my college tuition. After six months, I couldn’t see the value in it. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out. And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life. So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK. It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made. The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required classes that didn’t interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked interesting.It wasn’t all romantic. I didn’t have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friends’ rooms, I returned Coke bottles for the 5 ¢ deposits to buy food with, and I would walk the 7 miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple. I loved it. And much of what I stumbled into by following my curiosity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on. Let me give you one example:Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country. Throughout the campus every poster, every label on every drawer, was beautifully hand calligraphed. Because I had dropped out and didn’t have to take the normal classes, I decided to take a calligraphy class to learn how to do this. I learned about serif and sans serif typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations, about what makes great typography great. It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can’t capture, and I found it fascinating.None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life. But 10 years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me. And we designed it all into the Mac. It was the first computer with beautiful typography. If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts. And since W indows just copied the Mac, it’s likely that no personal computer would have them. If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do. Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college. But it was very, very clear looking backward 10 years later.Again, you can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backward. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something - your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.My second story is about love and loss.I was lucky - I found what I loved to do early in life. Woz and I started Apple in my parents’ garage when I was 20. We worked hard, and in 10 years Apple had grown from just the two of us in a garage into a $2 billion company with o ver 4,000 employees. We had just released our finest creation - the Macintosh - a year earlier, and I had just turned 30. And then I got fired. How can you get fired from a company you started? Well, as Apple grew we hired someone who I thought was very talented to run the company with me, and for the first year or so things went well. But then our visions of the future began to diverge and eventually we had a falling out. When we did, our Board of Directors sided with him. So at 30 I was out. And very publicly out. What had been the focus of my entire adult life was gone, and it was devastating.I really didn’t know what to do for a few months. I felt that I had let the previous generation of entrepreneurs down  - that I had dropped the baton as it was being passed to me. I met with David Packard and Bob Noyce and tried to apologize for screwing up so badly. I was a very public failure, and I even thought about running away from the valley. But something slowly began to dawn on me - I still loved what I did. The turn of events at Apple had not changed that one bit. I had been rejected, but I was still in love. And so I decided to start over.I didn’t see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.During the next five years, I started a company named NeXT, another company named Pixar, and fell in love with an amazing woman who would become my wife. Pixar went on to create the world’s first computer animated feature film, Toy Story, and is now the most successful animation studio in the world. In a remarkable turn of events, Apple bought NeXT, I returned to Apple, and the technology we developed at NeXT is at the heart of Apple’s current renaissance. And Laurene and I have a wonderful family together.I ’m pretty sure none of this would have happened if I hadn’t been fired from Apple. It was awful tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it. Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don’t lose faith. I’m convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You’ve got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don’t settle.My third story is about death.When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: “If you live each day as if it was your last, some day you’ll most certainly be right.” It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?” And whenever the answer has been “No” for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything - all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure  - these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer. I had a scan at 7:30 in the morning, and it clearly showed a tumor on my p ancreas. I didn’t even know what a pancreas was. The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that is incurable, and that I should expect to live no longer than three to six months. My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which is doctor’s code for prepare to die. It means to try to tell your kids everything you thought you’d have the next 10 years to tell them in just a few months. It means to make sure everything is buttoned up so that it will be as easy as possible for your family. It means to say your goodbyes.I lived with that diagnosis all day. Later that evening I had a biopsy, where they stuck an endoscope down my throat, through my stomach and into my intestines, put a needle into my pancreas and got a few cells from the tumor. I was sedated, but my wife, who was there, told me that when they viewed the cells under a microscope the doctors started crying because it turned out to be a very rare form of pancreatic cancer that is cu rable with surgery. I had the surgery and I’m fine now.This was the closest I’ve been to facing death, and I hope it’s the closest I get for a few more decades. Having lived through it, I can now say this to you with a bit more certainty than when death was a useful but purely intellectual concept:No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of oth ers’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.When I was young, there was an amazing publication called The Whole Earth Catalog, which was one of the bibles of my generation. It was created by a fellow named Stewart Brand not far from here in Menlo Park, and he brought it to life with his poetic touch. This was in the late 1960s, before personal computers and desktop publishing, so it was all made with typewriters, scissors and Polaroid cameras. It was sort of like Google in paperback form, 35 years before Google came along: It was idealistic, and overflowing with neat tools and great notions.Stewart and his team put out several issues of The Whole Earth Catalog, and then when it had run its course, they put out a final issue. It was the mid-1970s, and I was your age. On the back cover of their final issue was a photograph o f an early morning country road, the kind you might find yourself hitchhiking on if you were so adventurous. Beneath it were the words: “Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.” It was their farewell message as they signed off. Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish. And I have always wished that for myself. And now, as you graduate to begin anew, I wish that for you.Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.Thank you all very much.
